Сегодня в Саудовской Аравии официально стартовал шестой сезон чемпионата по гонкам на электромобилях, причём это сдвоенный этап, и первая из гонок проходит уже сегодня, в пятницу.
Ей предшествовала квалификация на узкой уличной трассе в Эд-Диръия, которая принесла первые небольшие сенсации. Состояние покрытия было неважным – асфальт пока довольно пыльный, и машины сильно скользят – лучше всех со сложными условиями справился гонщик BMW Алекс Симс. В финале квалификации британец проехал круг за 1 мин. 14,563 секунды, но вторая и третья позиция достались гонщикам заводской команды Mercedes Стоффелю Вандорну и дебютанту Формулы E Нику де Врису.
Четвёртое время показал гонщик Venturi Эдоардо Мортара, а опытный Сэм Бёрд будет стартовать только пятым, поскольку в решающей попытке допустил ошибку, заблокировав колёса. Ещё одним участником финала квалификации, так называемого Суперпоула, был представитель Mahindra Жером д’Амброзио, и он оказался на шестой строчке протокола.
Любопытно, что за исключением Бёрда, в финал не попал ни один из признанных грандов Формулы E. В первой квалификационной сессии принимали участие гонщики, завершившие прошлый сезон в первой шестёрке, однако ни одному из них не удалось пройти в Суперпоул. Действующий чемпион серии Жан-Эрик Вернь стартует только 11-м, Себастьен Буэми – 14-м, Лукас ди Грасси и вовсе 19-м. Но Андре Лоттерер, ныне выступающий за новую заводскую команду Porsche, поднялся до седьмой строчки протокола квалификации.
Также стоит отметить, что напарник Эдоардо Мортара по команде Venturi, бывший гонщик Формулы 1 Фелипе Масса, показал лишь 17-е время, а ещё один дебютант Формулы E, гонщик Dragon Брендон Хартли – 18-й.
